Is $150 a month for a newly licensed driver a good insurance rate?

$1800 a year isn't terrible but I mean it really depends on what other people in the same state/area. I paid 1700 a year in BC and only 884 in Alberta last year, so there can be big differences

It was $90/month for liability on my old B13 Sentra, back when I was 16. Of course, now it's $90/month for full coverage on a 2013 Mazda3, plus my Fiat, so my rates haven't gone down any. :P

supposedly it's easy. But I still have to take my last drive before I'm eligible for the test. Before that I have to renew my permit, I'm at the dmv doing that now

I suppose it would vary depending on what vehicle your planning on insuring (Think '92 Civic vs 2015 suburban). I was lucky enough to ride my parents policy for my first 2 or 3 years of legal driving.

Thats not terrible. I'm 23 and just got a plan on my own for my GTI at $130 a month.

When I got my license my insurance rate for a set of twins was $200 a month in a no fault state. So $150 isnt too bad, I assume its a fairly comprehensive policy?

Let me guess you just turn around in the parking lot? In New York its actually driving and you have to parallel park and the lot. Should be easy because I'm a master of parralel parking!

Your state makes all the difference. In Michigan, that would be an absolute steal for a teenager on their own. I paid 90$ a month with 6 years of perfect driving record on a ratty old jetta for the bare minimum of coverage.

my mom pays 60 a month but she's also 60 years old. And she is astonished that our insurer rated us 150 for me.

For which kind of vehicle? Am I right in guessing that the 150 a month just add you as another driver on the Oddity, or some other car of your parents?

In London, that would be unbelievably good. I was chatting to someone on here the other night who's being quoted $3k+ a year, which is pretty typical where he lives. And something like your Ranger would probably double that. Plus double it again in fuel cost, I bet :)

Is the vehicle titled to you, with you as the primary driver?

It was only around $80/month for my NB Miata (when I was newly licensed), about $60 a month for my 530i wagon, and about $90/month for my 924. These are all listed as my parents, but with me as the primary driver.

Michigan is unique among all states because personal injury protection is unlimited for car insurance policies by law, hence the massive cost.

Hard to tell...I don't really do insurance shopping across state lines. It varies so much. I would call other companies and get quotes and compare.

Yeah, usually titling it to a parent until you have a decent driving record is a good call. If they're on-board with it, of course.

I just got my license and I am on my moms policy with State Farm (which also has our house insurance on it), and with a good student discount, its like 60-70 a month for a car and me as a driver.

We have state farm as well, do they give good student discounts to college students? I may ask my mom to put the car in her name, so that way I'd maybe get a break on the insurance costs.

In Idaho, where I live, I just took my test on the 18th of Aug. the test was pretty easy, I didn't have to parallel park, which was good because I suck at it, and avoid doing it if at all possible. I had to do 4 right turns, four left turns, a little bit of highway driving (no freeway driving because the nearest freeway is 90 miles away). and it took all of about half an hour, and the written test was REALLY easy

I would imagine they do give good student discounts, but Im not positive, the other thing, which I need to do more of is the Steer Clear program https://www.statefarm.com/insurance/auto… which for you since your over 19, would take you all of about 2 days to do. when you finish that, you get like a 30% discount, and once your 25, your insurance goes to like half. For the car title, I would put it in your name and your moms name. Thats what we were told to do, my car is in my name and my moms name, which helps for insurance (have them put it as you "or" your mother on the car title, so then when you sell it, you only have to have 1 person sign it to sell it, thats how it is on my car).

State Farm definitely does good student discounts. I had those on my dad's plan until I graduated last year and also paid $60-$70 a month as a driver under his policy. When I bought my new car in my name, I had to get my own insurance and All State turned out to be the best rate and coverage. Be sure to shop around and don't be afraid to contact an actual agent. They often know how to get rates lower than the self-serve quotes and with better coverage.

My Kia was ~$220 full coverage when I started out at ~18-19. My 08' Grand Cherokee is ~$180 currently through Progressive but I'm switching to Geico to get it down to $110/mo full coverage at 21.

I have State Farm, and I dont think I'd want full coverage because I wouldnt spend more than 4 grand on a first car. $150 would be for full coverage, plus I think I'd shoot to gain some discounts, like a drivers ed discount, Good student discount, etc... And I must Say, You have the best Avatar ever. The harddrive failure icon from the old iPod OS, Very cool.

I had to get full coverage - such is the life of an admittedly stupid sub-prime auto financee. I do have the 10% discount for defensive driving course completion (hint: ticketschool.com, $25 for the course and 6 hours of copy-and-paste-to-Notepad) and the normal discounts like Paperless Billing and other silly things like ABS and anti-theft.
